ISO 50001:2018
ISO 50001 is the international standard addressing the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system (or “EnMS”). The standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use, and therefore their energy costs and their greenhouse gas emissions. The ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management Systems (EnMS) standard was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), updated from 2011. The purpose of implementing a standard is to allow your organization to establish a system to continually improve, and in this case, improve its energy performance. An EnMS will improve your energy efficiency, energy security, energy use and consumption.
ISO 50001 provides a framework of requirements for organizations to:
- Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy
- Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy
- Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use
- Measure the results
- Review how well the policy works, and
- Continually improve energy management.
